In my performance series The Bread Project, I bring the process of making bread to people in unexpected places. In office lobbies and art venues, I invite people to join in the eight-hour process of making naturally leavened bread. Each venue is different and comes with its own issues. The bread making process acts in contrast to the focus of the space, questioning our busy lifestyle and our expectations of a place. Passersby are encouraged to join in the process either as an observer or by getting their hands into the sticky dough. In the end the bread is baked, sliced, and given away to all.
